The Spartanburg Flames varsity basketball team secured their spot in the regional playoffs with a commanding 82-71 victory over Eagles Academy last Tuesday night at the Home Gymnasium. The victory marks the culmination of a hard-fought season and sets up an exciting playoff run for the Flames.

Senior captain Marcus Johnson led the charge with 28 points and 12 rebounds, earning his second Player of the Week honor this season. “We’ve been working toward this moment all season,” Johnson said after the game. “The team chemistry we’ve built really showed tonight.”

Coach Mike Thompson praised his team’s execution in the crucial fourth quarter. “Our defensive pressure in the final eight minutes was the difference maker. We forced six turnovers and converted them into easy baskets.” The Flames outscored the Eagles 24-15 in the final frame to pull away for the victory.

Junior point guard Sarah Martinez added 18 points and 8 assists, while sophomore forward David Chen contributed 16 points off the bench. The balanced scoring attack has been a hallmark of this Flames team throughout the season.

The playoff berth is the team’s third in four years under Coach Thompson’s leadership. The Flames will face Storm Athletic Center in the first round of regionals on January 29th at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available through the school’s athletic department.

“We’re not satisfied with just making the playoffs,” Johnson emphasized. “Our goal is to make a deep run and bring home a championship for our community and school.”
