The Spartanburg Flames soccer team captured the regional championship with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Thunder United on Saturday afternoon. The win capped off a perfect playoff run and earned the team their first regional title in three years.

Junior midfielder Alex Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute, converting a beautiful cross from teammate Emma Johnson. “I saw the ball coming in and just knew I had to get my foot on it,” Rodriguez said. “When it hit the back of the net, the whole team erupted.”

The Flames took an early lead in the 23rd minute when senior captain Lisa Chen found the net off a corner kick. Thunder United equalized just before halftime, setting up a tense second half that had the capacity crowd on their feet throughout.

Coach Carlos Mendez, a former professional player, credited his team’s preparation and mental toughness. “We’ve been building toward this moment all season. The players showed incredible composure under pressure and executed our game plan perfectly.”

Goalkeeper Tommy Martinez made several crucial saves in the final minutes to preserve the victory, including a spectacular diving stop in stoppage time. “Tommy was absolutely phenomenal when we needed him most,” Mendez noted.

The regional championship advances the Flames to the state tournament, where they will face the winner of the Eastern Regional final. The state semifinal is scheduled for February 5th.

“This is just the beginning,” Chen declared after lifting the regional trophy. “We have our sights set on the state championship now.”
